As director of the Pittsburgh regional office, Dr. Nahemow was responsible for job descriptions, staff evaluations, budget, staff management, operational plan, and coordination of local board of directors. Office income tripled during her tenure. She recruited and developed a strong, active board of directors, implemented a highly successful education and public relations campaign to increase community awareness of organizational programs and built regional income to highest per capita of regional offices. Dr. Nahemow initiated a highly successful corporate dinner program and instituted a telemarketing campaign which grew from $28,000 to $160,000 in three year period. In recognition of her achievements she received a national award for excellence in major gifts.

Dr. Nahemow reorganized board structure and procedures, instituted long and short range planning procedures, successful board recruitment processes, and new budgeting procedures. She developed and stabilized agency funding, raising over $900,000 in operating funds during a three-year period through corporate, business and foundation giving programs. A previously financially failing agency grew from an operating budget of $150,000 to $400,000 with an operating surplus each year. During her tenure endowment funds also grew by 500%. The agency came into compliance with national regulations, program participation was increased 200%, and linkages were expanded with other area children’s services.

Dr. Nahemow developed an area wide community education and training department, conducted needs analysis, developed and taught courses. During her tenure she increased use of agency services and built effective relationships with community agencies and school districts. Dr. Nahemow worked with top level State officials to successfully correct problems in statewide reimbursement systems. Dr. Nahemow reduced operating costs and saved major portions of program when government funding cuts threatened continued operations, wrote grants to government funding bodies to secure support for programs, and was one of the principal architects of a $1 Million Federal Mental Health grant. As Director of Development she instituted an agency fundraising program at the request of the Executive Director when federal support was withdrawn with a change in administrations, obtained Board of Directors support, instituted a community campaign including direct mail, phonothon, special events, and implemented all needed public relations support.
